The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue
Each time a major awards ceremony draws close, you'll find a clamor for the addition additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of followers with niche passions.
A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely that year
- Another creative title was excluded that year
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
- Just some puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for many years.
The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge game development, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
